The second-airport plan.
Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) can be a smart alternative if the flight price or route is better. It is usually a shorter drive to Volos than Athens, and the city is easy for one night: waterfront walk, dinner, hotel, then south to Volos.
Costs are estimates for summer travel. Hotel rates swing by date, room type, and events, so use these as planning ranges, not guarantees.
How to use it
Best when the flights are easier or cheaper.
SKG to Volos: drive roughly 2.5-3 hours. By bus, go from the airport toward Thessaloniki Macedonia intercity bus station, then take KTEL service toward Volos.
Best stay areas: waterfront for views, Ladadika for food and nightlife, Aristotelous for central logistics, and Ano Poli only if you want atmosphere more than easy luggage movement.
