Travel & Stay

Getting Here

Fly into Athens (ATH) for the widest options, or Thessaloniki (SKG) if routes price better.

Getting Around

Rental car optional for exploring; wedding-day shuttle planned between key Volos wedding points.

Where to Stay

Stay in central Volos for easy restaurants, waterfront walks, and shuttle pickup.

Things to Do

Explore the waterfront, Pelion villages, Meteora, beaches, and local food.

Airport Options

ATH or SKG

Athens has the most international routes and is the primary recommendation. Thessaloniki is the best second option if the timing or fares are better.

Wedding Transport

Ceremony & Reception

Ceremony is at Agios Konstantinos & Eleni in Volos; reception is at Staikos Events Venue. Shuttle timing will be shared closer to the wedding.
1

Pick the airport

ATH for most guests

Choose Athens for the widest flights. Choose Thessaloniki only if the fare or timing is clearly better.
2

Choose the sleep plan

Airport, city, or Volos

Late flight: sleep near the airport. Sightseeing: stay central Athens or Thessaloniki. Wedding weekend: central Volos.
3

Lock the transfer

Car, driver, or KTEL

Rental cars are best for exploring. Drivers are easiest for groups. Buses are cheapest but need booked seats.
4

Add the fun parts

Food, beaches, day trips

Once the route and hotel are set, use the city guides for restaurants, coffee, beaches, museums, and extra days.

Airport to Volos

How to get from Athens or Thessaloniki to the wedding weekend.

Bus seats matter

Taking KTEL? Book seats online ahead of time.

July routes can fill, and a confirmed seat makes flight timing, hotel plans, and luggage transfers much easier.

Least planning

Private driver Best for older relatives, groups, late arrivals, or anyone who wants door-to-door help with bags.

Most flexible

Rental car Best for Pelion beaches, day trips, and guests comfortable driving Greek highways.

Lowest cost

KTEL bus Best for solo guests, but only if seats are booked ahead and arrival times match the schedule.

Primary Route

Athens Airport (ATH) to Volos

Best for: most international guests, Athens stopovers, and the widest flight choices. Drive: about 3.5-4.5 hours to Volos. Estimate €55-€90 for fuel/tolls one way, before rental or driver cost. Bus plan: ATH to KTEL Liosion by taxi or pre-booked transfer, then KTEL Magnesia/Volos service to Volos. Book bus seats online ahead of travel, then arrive at the bus station 30-45 minutes early. Est. cost: KTEL route about €35-€60 per person plus airport-to-terminal transfer; private transfer/car service can be several hundred euros.

Second Major Airport

Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) to Volos

Best for: guests finding better European routes, lower fares, or a northern Greece stopover. Drive: about 2.5-3 hours to Volos. Estimate €35-€65 for fuel/tolls one way, plus rental car or private driver cost. Bus plan: SKG to KTEL Makedonia station by airport bus/taxi, then KTEL service to Volos. Plan roughly 4-5+ hours door to door. Book the Thessaloniki to Volos bus seat before travel and leave buffer for bags, traffic, and platform finding. Est. cost: bus route about €25-€45 per person plus airport transfer; rental car is usually the simplest if staying flexible.

Schedules and prices change seasonally. Check live KTEL times before booking flights, especially for late arrivals or Sunday travel.

A guide to

Volos & Beyond

Default base

Stay central

Best for restaurants, waterfront walks, pharmacies, taxi pickup, and wedding-weekend simplicity.

Wedding day

Shuttle/taxi

Central taxis are the easiest local backup. Wedding-day shuttle details will be shared once pickup timing is finalized.

Extra day

Rent a car

Only needed for Pelion beaches, villages, Meteora, or staying outside central Volos.

First plan

Waterfront + dinner

Start with the promenade, coffee, and a tsipouro or meze dinner before adding bigger day trips.

Volos transit

How to arrive, get around, and move between wedding weekend stops.

Arriving by KTEL

Volos KTEL station

Best for: guests coming by intercity bus from Athens, Thessaloniki, or another Greek city. The KTEL Magnesia station is in central Volos at Aristidou Zachou 5. From there, most waterfront hotels are a short taxi ride or manageable walk with light luggage. Est. cost: taxi from the station to central hotels often around €6-€12 depending on bags, traffic, and exact address.

Check Schedules

KTEL routes to Volos

Best for: confirming Athens/Thessaloniki bus times before choosing flights or hotel nights. The live ticket search is useful for Volos arrival and return routes, especially if guests fly out of a different city. Book seats ahead if you are taking the bus. Guests should not assume they can buy a good-timed seat after landing. Est. cost: intercity fares vary by route and date; check live KTEL pricing before booking.

Best Default

Walk central Volos

Best for: waterfront hotels, cafes, restaurants, Ermou shopping, pharmacies, and short daytime errands. Central stays make the no-rental-car version of the weekend much easier. Est. cost: free; most central errands are easiest on foot.

Taxi

Radio Taxi / short rides

Best for: hotel transfers, dinner after dark, Anavros Beach, ceremony timing, and anyone in heels. Most central hotels can call taxis, and taxi stands are common around the port and city center. Est. cost: short central rides often €6-€15; longer wedding-area rides can be more.

Wedding Day

Shuttle planned

Best for: moving between central Volos, Agios Konstantinos & Eleni, and Staikos Events without guests coordinating cars. Final pickup points and times will be shared once wedding-day timing is confirmed. Est. cost: planned wedding transport for guests; schedule to come.

Public Bus

Volos city buses

Best for: low-cost daytime movement around Volos if the route and timing are convenient. City buses are best for low-pressure daytime errands or beach plans. Taxis and the shuttle are better for wedding timing and late nights. Est. cost: local fares are low; budget roughly €2-€4 per ride until live fares are checked.

Rental Car

Optional for exploring

Best for: Pelion villages, beaches outside Volos, Meteora, airport transfers, and guests staying outside the center. Not needed for a central wedding-only stay; very useful for beach days, Pelion villages, or Meteora. Est. cost: roughly €45-€100/day in summer, plus insurance, fuel, parking, and tolls.

Private Driver

Good for day trips

Best for: groups who want Pelion or Meteora without one guest driving mountain roads. Full-day drivers are easier to arrange before July weekends, especially for Pelion or Meteora. Est. cost: often €120-€350+ depending on hours, distance, and vehicle size.

Hotel Help

Ask your hotel to arrange

Best for: airport pickups, late-night arrivals, Pelion day trips, or relatives who need a smoother plan. Hotels can often coordinate airport pickups, late-night arrivals, and day-trip drivers with written quotes. Est. cost: varies by route; pre-arranged hotel drivers are usually easier than negotiating after arrival.

Back to Volos menu

Volos days out

Beach, museum, mountain village, or full-day adventure.

Signature Half-Day

Pelion little train

The old mountain train runs from Ano Lechonia toward Milies through green Pelion scenery. Best for guests who want something memorable without committing to a full beach day. Est. cost: ticket price varies by season; add taxi/car to Ano Lechonia and lunch or coffee in Milies.

Museums

Athanasakeio Museum

Best for a quieter morning or very hot afternoon. Add Tsalapatas Museum, Volos City Museum, or the Giorgio de Chirico Art Centre if you want more. Est. cost: usually low-cost museum entry; allow 60-90 minutes.

Close Beach

Anavros Beach

The easiest quick swim from central Volos. Keep expectations simple: convenient, close, and good for a low-effort beach hour. Est. cost: free beach; cafe/lounger spend varies.

Closest Beach Towns

Alykes or Agria

Alykes is close and practical for a quick swim south of Volos. Agria is better for a seaside stroll, cafes, and a low-pressure lunch by the water. Est. cost: taxi or car plus cafe spend; easy half-day if people do not want mountain roads.

Beach Afternoon

Kala Nera or Afissos

Easy Pagasetic Gulf beach towns if you have a car and want a relaxed swim, lunch, and sunset without a huge drive. Est. cost: rental car/fuel plus lunch €20-€40 per person.

Athens Stopover

For a night or two before Volos.

Most guests will route through Athens International Airport. If you are staying overnight, keep it central so you can see the city without turning travel days into a production.

Costs are estimates for summer travel: activities are per person, hotels are per night before taxes and fees. Check live rates before booking.

If you land late

Sleep near ATH

Use the ATH hotel list, then continue to Volos the next morning by car, driver, or KTEL.

If you stay 1-2 nights

Stay central

Syntagma, Plaka, Monastiraki, or Acropolis keeps sightseeing and airport transfers simple.

If you go straight north

Book the transfer

KTEL is cheapest, rental car is flexible, and a private driver is easiest for families or groups.

If you add time

Pick one area

Do Acropolis/Plaka for classic Athens, Psiri for food, or Riviera/Sounion only with a real half day.

Athens transit

How to land in Athens, use the city, then continue to Volos.

Airport to Athens

ATH into the city

Best for: guests staying 1-2 nights before heading to Volos. Options: Metro Line 3 to Syntagma/Monastiraki, airport express buses, taxi, or pre-booked transfer. Metro is clean and predictable if you are not overloaded with bags. Est. cost: airport bus about €6, metro about €9, taxi/transfer often €40-€65 depending on time and destination.

Airport to KTEL

ATH to KTEL Liosion

Best for: guests going straight from the airport to a Volos bus without sleeping in Athens. Taxi or pre-booked transfer is the simplest luggage connection. Public transit can work when the timing is relaxed; KTEL departure terminals should be checked close to travel. Est. cost: taxi/transfer to Liosion often costs more than public transit, but is usually simpler with bags.

Pre-booked Ride

Pre-booked ATH transfer

Best for: guests who want a driver waiting at arrivals, especially with luggage, parents, or late flights. Pre-booked rides work best when the provider has the flight number, hotel address, passenger count, luggage count, and van needs. Est. cost: usually more than public transit; compare with hotel-arranged transfers for groups.

Taxi App

FREENOW Athens taxis

Best for: central Athens hops, late dinners, or reaching KTEL Liosion without negotiating a street taxi. The app is useful inside Athens. ATH-to-Volos trips are better handled by a dedicated transfer or rental car. Est. cost: central rides vary; airport and intercity rides cost much more than metro/bus.

Bus to Volos

KTEL Athens to Volos

Best for: solo guests or anyone avoiding a rental car. KTEL Magnesia/Volos live times matter most for flight connections. Airport immigration, bags, and the ride to Liosion all need buffer time. Book the bus seat online ahead of time. Do this before you rely on a specific flight-to-bus connection. Est. cost: about €35-€60 per person plus airport transfer; plan roughly 5-6+ hours door to door.

Rental Car

ATH to Volos by car

Best for: families, groups, Pelion beach plans, or guests who want maximum flexibility. Route: leave Athens on the main north-south highway corridor toward Lamia/Larissa, then turn toward Volos. Est. cost: 3.5-4.5 hours; fuel/tolls roughly €55-€90 one way, plus rental cost.

Private Transfer

Driver from ATH to Volos

Best for: groups landing together, older relatives, or anyone who wants the simplest no-driving option. Private transfers are easiest when the driver has the flight number, luggage count, destination hotel, and delayed-bag waiting policy. Est. cost: often several hundred euros one way; split by group size if sharing a van.

Inside Athens

Metro, walking & taxis

Best for: central sightseeing without renting a car in Athens. Syntagma, Plaka, Monastiraki, and Acropolis are the easiest bases for walking, metro, and short taxis. Est. cost: central taxi hops often €7-€18; metro tickets are low-cost compared with taxis.

Piraeus Port

Piraeus Port to Syntagma

Best for: guests coming from a ferry or staying by Piraeus who want central Athens without a taxi. Useful routes: OASA line 040 runs Piraeus-Syntagma all day and night. In season, X80 Piraeus-Acropolis-Syntagma Express can be faster and more visitor-focused when operating. Simplest with bags: Metro Line 3 from Piraeus/Dimotiko Theatro to Syntagma is usually easier than boarding a bus at the port.

Central Pickup

Syntagma as a meeting point

Best for: shared vans, family pickup points, and guests staying in different central hotels. Syntagma works well as a single central pickup point for shared vans or family transfers to Volos. Est. cost: meeting point is free; transfer cost depends on vehicle size and provider.

Late Arrival

Sofitel ATH or next-day Volos

Best for: late arrivals who do not want to navigate Athens after a long flight. Airport sleep works best for next-morning rental car pickup, pre-booked transfer, or KTEL connection to Volos. Est. cost: airport-area hotels vary widely; compare against a central hotel plus taxi.

ATH Buffer

Airport-area errands

Best for: guests with a few hours near ATH before pickup, rental car timing, or a late check-in. Sofitel covers the sleep need, Designer Outlet Athens covers easy shopping, and Brauron is a short cultural stop for guests with a car. Est. cost: taxis around the airport area vary; build in extra time because these stops are not central Athens.
Back to Athens menu

ATH airport hotels

Good options when guests land late, leave early, or want to skip central Athens.

Airport-area stays are spread across Spata, Markopoulo, Artemida, Rafina, Vravrona, Pallini, and Mati. Shuttle hours, taxi cost, and late check-in vary by property.

Terminal / Easiest

Sofitel Athens Airport

Best for: the simplest late-arrival or early-departure night. It is the only true airport hotel and sits right by the terminal and metro. Good to know: usually the priciest airport-area option, but it saves a taxi, shuttle coordination, and late-night logistics. Booking note: flexible rates are worth comparing early for July weekends.

Chain / Attica Avenue

Holiday Inn Athens Attica Av. Airport West

Best for: guests who want a familiar chain hotel, indoor pool, restaurant, and easier highway access before driving north. Good to know: shuttle schedules and pickup details matter here. It is airport-area convenient, not walkable from the terminal. Booking note: shuttle timing should match the actual flight window.

Seaside Resort / Vravrona

Zeus Dolce Athens

Best for: a softer landing with sea views, resort amenities, and a calmer first night outside the city. Good to know: this is best with a taxi, transfer, or rental car, and it is not a walking-into-Athens base. Booking note: transfer options and restaurant hours matter for late arrivals.

Rafina / Ferry Port

Hotel Avra Rafina

Best for: airport overnights that also want a seaside town, Rafina port access, or a short beach walk. Good to know: shuttle timing can be the whole value proposition here, and pickup rules can change. Booking note: strong option if guests add an island ferry from Rafina.

Markopoulo / Shuttle

Aethon Airport Project

Best for: a practical airport sleep in Markopoulo with a hotel-style setup and published airport-transfer windows. Good to know: transfer windows are not the same as 24-hour service, so arrival time matters. Booking note: good for guests who want simple, direct airport logistics.

Spata / Small Hotel

Comfort Stay Athens Airport

Best for: a quieter small-hotel/studio feel near ATH, especially if guests want shuttle support and parking. Good to know: shuttle process, room type, and dinner/breakfast timing vary by booking. Booking note: useful for late arrivals who want a low-fuss room outside the terminal.

Spata / Apartment-Style

Zed Smart Property by Airstay

Best for: guests who prefer self-check-in, apartment-style rooms, and a Spata base close to ATH. Good to know: transfers may cost extra, and check-in is more self-directed than a staffed hotel desk. Booking note: good for independent travelers comfortable with app/message-based logistics.

Markopoulo / Country Stay

Varaba Country House

Best for: a warmer guesthouse feel, countryside calm, and a more personal overnight close to the airport. Good to know: pickup, drop-off, and meal options are the main logistics questions. Booking note: good for couples or families who prefer character over chain-hotel convenience.

Markopoulo / Suites

GK Airport Suites

Best for: apartment-style suites, quick airport staging, and travelers who want more space than a standard room. Good to know: shuttle and transfer details can vary by booking channel. Booking note: good for guests with luggage who want a straightforward pre-Volos night.

Artemida / Beachfront

Seasabelle Hotel

Best for: a beachside overnight in Artemida when guests want fresh air and a restaurant/bar nearby. Good to know: it is beach convenient, not city convenient, with taxi or arranged transfer needed for airport timing. Booking note: nice for a relaxed first night if the flight lands early enough to enjoy the water.

Artemida / Airport Inn

Peri's Hotel

Best for: a practical small-hotel airport overnight with a guesthouse feel and shuttle-oriented positioning. Good to know: 24-hour shuttle details, room configuration, and arrival process are the important variables. Booking note: good backup when Sofitel is too expensive or sold out.

Pallini / Boutique

Mikelina Boutique Hotel

Best for: a polished boutique option northeast of Athens with easier airport-side access than central hotels. Good to know: Pallini is not right beside the terminal, so taxi or transfer cost changes the value. Booking note: useful if guests want a nicer room without staying in central Athens.

Mati / Seafront

NLH Mati Seafront

Best for: guests who want a coastal hotel and pool/sea energy before continuing toward Volos. Good to know: taxi or transfer is needed, and Mati is quiet compared with Athens or Rafina. Booking note: better for a relaxed overnight than a sightseeing base.

Mati / Resort

Zeus Essence Ramada Athens

Best for: a larger seafront hotel setup, pool time, and guests who want a resort-style airport-side night. Good to know: it is still a transfer ride from ATH, with travel time and late check-in policies to factor in. Booking note: compare with NLH Mati and Avra if the priority is coast plus airport access.

More Athens plans

Extra options if guests have a half day, full day, or a slower morning.

Ancient Athens

Ancient Agora

Best for: people who want ruins without the Acropolis crowd level. The Temple of Hephaestus is one of the prettiest stops. Pairs well with Monastiraki, Psiri, or Plaka so it fits naturally into a central day. Est. cost: often included in multi-site tickets; otherwise expect a modest entry fee. Allow 60-90 minutes.

Stadium

Panathenaic Stadium

Best for: Olympics history, photos, and a quick stop that does not eat the whole day. Pairs well with the National Garden, Syntagma, or Kolonaki coffee. Est. cost: roughly €5-€10 per person. Allow 30-60 minutes.

Classic Ruins

Temple of Zeus & Hadrian's Arch

Best for: a quick ancient-site add-on near Plaka and the Acropolis Museum. Good fit: quick street views from Hadrian's Arch, with optional temple-site entry if the timing feels easy. Est. cost: street view free; site entry usually modest. Allow 20-45 minutes.

View Walk

Filopappou Hill

Best for: Acropolis views, a breezier walk, and photos without buying a ticket. Best timing is early morning or golden hour, away from the hottest part of July afternoons. Est. cost: free. Allow 45-90 minutes depending on pace.

Major Museum

National Archaeological Museum

Best for: guests who love museums and want the deeper Greek-history option beyond the Acropolis Museum. Taxi or metro access is straightforward, and the museum pairs best with a lighter rest of day. Est. cost: about €6-€12 depending on season. Allow 1.5-3 hours.

Greek Art

Benaki Museum

Best for: a polished cultural stop near Kolonaki, with Greek history, art, and design in one place. Pairs well with Kolonaki lunch, shopping, or Lycabettus later. Est. cost: usually around €10-€15. Allow 1-2 hours.

Design / Art

Museum of Cycladic Art

Thessaloniki Stopover

The second-airport plan.

Thessaloniki Airport (SKG) can be a smart alternative if the flight price or route is better. It is usually a shorter drive to Volos than Athens, and the city is easy for one night: waterfront walk, dinner, hotel, then south to Volos.

Costs are estimates for summer travel. Hotel rates swing by date, room type, and events, so use these as planning ranges, not guarantees.

Use SKG when

Flights are better

It is a shorter drive to Volos than Athens, but usually has fewer international route options.

Best one-night base

Waterfront or center

Aristotelous, Ladadika, and waterfront hotels make dinner, walks, taxis, and morning departure easy.

To Volos

Drive or KTEL

Rental car is simplest for flexibility. KTEL works well if the bus time matches your flight.

Keep it simple

Walk + dinner

White Tower, waterfront, Modiano/Ladadika, and one good meal are enough for a clean stopover.

Things to do

First Walk

White Tower & waterfront

What it offers: the simplest Thessaloniki intro, sea views, sunset light, and an easy orientation point. Good fit: promenade walking from the White Tower toward the umbrellas, then an easy return toward dinner. Est. cost: walk free; museum/tower entry is usually low-cost if open.

Food / Nightlife

Ladadika

What it offers: the easiest dinner area, old warehouses, tavernas, bars, and enough energy for a one-night stopover. Good fit: dinner, side-street wandering, and a casual drink without needing a taxi. Est. cost: dinner €20-€45 per person; cocktails €10-€16 each.

Old City

Ano Poli

What it offers: old walls, views, quieter streets, and a more atmospheric side of the city. Good fit: a daytime view walk with taxi backup for the steep return. Est. cost: free to walk; taxi from center often manageable for a group.

History

Archaeological Museum

What it offers: a strong, air-conditioned history stop near the waterfront museum cluster. Pairs well with the White Tower and a waterfront lunch when there is a half day. Est. cost: museum entry usually modest; allow 60-90 minutes.

History

Museum of Byzantine Culture

What it offers: one of the better museum choices if you like Byzantine history, icons, and quieter galleries. Pairs well with the Archaeological Museum when the weather is too hot for a long walk. Est. cost: museum entry usually modest; allow 60-90 minutes.

Market / Food Hall

Modiano Market

What it offers: central food hall energy, snacks, casual browsing, and an easy rainy-day or hot-day pause. Good fit: a pre-dinner light bite, coffee, or edible gifts. Est. cost: browsing free; snacks/drinks €5-€20.

Thessaloniki transit

How to land at SKG, use Thessaloniki, then continue to Volos.

Airport to City

SKG into Thessaloniki

Best for: guests staying one night before driving or taking the bus south. Options: airport bus, taxi, rental car pickup, or pre-booked transfer. The airport bus is useful for the center and the intercity bus station. Est. cost: airport bus is low-cost; taxi/transfer to the center often around €25-€45 depending on time and traffic.

Airport to KTEL

SKG to KTEL Makedonia

Best for: guests going straight from the airport to the Volos bus. The airport bus and taxis both connect to KTEL Makedonia, Thessaloniki's main intercity bus station. Taxi is simpler with heavy luggage or tight timing. Est. cost: airport bus is low-cost; taxi/transfer often around €25-€45 depending on traffic.

Pre-booked Ride

Pre-booked SKG transfer

Best for: guests who want a driver at arrivals before heading to a hotel, KTEL Makedonia, or a private Volos transfer. Pre-booked rides work best when the provider has flight number, luggage count, hotel address, passenger count, and van needs. Est. cost: usually more than bus, but easier with luggage and late arrivals.

Taxi App

FREENOW Thessaloniki taxis

Best for: central hotel hops, dinners, hills around Ano Poli, and transfers between the center and KTEL. The app is useful inside Thessaloniki. SKG-to-Volos trips are better handled by rental car or dedicated transfer. Est. cost: central taxi hops are usually manageable for a group; airport rides cost more.

Bus to Volos

KTEL Makedonia to Volos

Best for: solo guests, budget-minded guests, or anyone landing early enough for a relaxed transfer. Live KTEL times matter most for Thessaloniki-to-Volos connections, with extra buffer for ticketing, bags, and platform finding. Book the bus seat online ahead of time. This is the big one if you are not renting a car. Est. cost: about €25-€45 per person plus airport transfer; plan roughly 4-5+ hours door to door.

Rental Car

SKG to Volos by car

Best for: guests who want the shorter drive to Volos and flexibility for beaches or Pelion. Route: follow the main highway corridor south past Katerini and Larissa, then continue toward Volos. Est. cost: 2.5-3 hours; fuel/tolls roughly €35-€65 one way, plus rental cost.

Private Transfer

Driver from SKG to Volos

Best for: groups landing together who want the simplest no-driving transfer. Private transfers are easiest when the driver has flight number, luggage count, hotel address, and delayed-bag waiting policy. Est. cost: commonly a few hundred euros one way depending on vehicle and pickup time.

Inside Thessaloniki

Walk, taxi, bus

Best for: one-night stopovers near Aristotelous, Ladadika, or the waterfront. Central stays keep food and sights walkable. Taxis help with luggage and hills; buses are best when the route is direct. Est. cost: walking is free; central taxi hops are usually manageable for a group.

Rental Timing

Pick up at SKG

Best for: leaving directly for Volos or keeping luggage simple. For one-night city stays, airport pickup can be easier than central pickup if parking is awkward. Est. cost: summer rentals often start around €45-€100/day before insurance and extras.

Late Arrival

Sleep near SKG or center

Best for: arrivals too late for a comfortable bus connection to Volos. Airport-area hotels are simplest for early car departures. Central hotels are better for dinner and a morning KTEL departure. Est. cost: depends on hotel area; compare airport taxi cost against the room price.

SKG Buffer

Airport-area stops

Best for: extra hours near the airport, rental car timing, families, or guests staying close to SKG. Hyatt Regency covers airport-area sleep, Mediterranean Cosmos covers shopping/food, NOESIS covers science-museum time, and Peraia covers seaside dinner. Est. cost: taxis/rideshares vary; these are easiest with a car or pre-booked pickup.
